These hot honey chicken wings are seasoned with a selection of herbs and spices that give the wings the best flavour. The wings are then baked until crispy then they are tossed in a sweet spicy honey sauce that complements the flavours of the seasoned chicken. They can also be cooked in the air fryer which will produce the perfect crisp wings.

This recipe makes hot honey chicken wings which have the perfect balance of sweet and spicy that complement each other well. They are perfect for serving at parties or gatherings as a finger food and they are sure to impress your guest.

What to Serve with Hot Honey Chicken Wings?

There are many foods that go well with these hot honey wings including my mac and cheese balls.

Healthier options that will pair nicely with these wings include feta and olive salad, crunchy rainbow salad, tomato and cucumber salad or an avocado salad.

They also go great with crispy garlic mushrooms, crispy onion rings or cheddar and garlic smashed potatoes.

Ingredients for Hot Honey Chicken Wings (Baked or Air Fryer)

For the full list of ingredients and measurements, scroll to the recipe card below.

    • Chicken wings – use raw chicken wings. If you buy whole wings then cut them at the joint.
    • Seasonings – the wings are seasoned with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, dried oregano and dried basil.
    • Baking Powder – it is important to use baking powder to ensure the wings become crispy.
    • Cornflour – works well with the baking powder to help the wings become crispy in the oven. Also known as cornstarch in some countries.
    • Cooking oil - use any oil to make the wings crispier.
    • Butter – use any butter to make the sauce.
    • Honey – use any honey you prefer. I use organic runny honey.
    • Chilli flakes – also known as crushed chillies.
    • Hot Sauce - I use Cholula sauce but Franks hot sauce also work well too.
    • Lime juice – I use lime juice to give the sauce a slight tang.
    • Parsley – use fresh parsley to garnish. This is optional.

How to Make Hot Honey Chicken Wings (Baked or Air Fryer)

    Season the wings

Using paper towels, dry the wings and add them to a bowl. Add in the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, basil, baking powder and cornflour then mix well to coat. Pour in oil and mix well.

    Cook the wings

If baking, preheat the oven to 220oC then arrange the wings on a grill rack or a baking tray lined with a grill rack. Ensure you leave some space between each wing so the air can circulate well to make them crispier. Bake in the top part of the oven for 45 - 50 minutes turning halfway through. Remove from the oven and allow to rest on the rack while you make the sauce.

If air frying, arrange the wings on the crisper or rack in a single layer and cook at 200oC for 25 - 30 minutes flipping halfway through.

    Make the hot honey sauce

Add the butter to a small pan and melt on a medium heat. Mix in the honey, chilli flakes, hot sauce and lime juice then allow to simmer for 4 - 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.

Toss the sauce with the wings

Add the wings to a bowl then pour the sauce onto the chicken and toss. Allow to stand for 5 minutes then serve.

    Recipe Tip

    • For crispy chicken wings, its important to dry the wings well before seasoning.

    Storage

Leftover hot honey wings can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
